– Belden (NYSE: BDC), a world leader in the development of signal transmission products for the industrial, enterprise, data center, broadcast and security markets, and DuPont Fluoropolymer Solutions jointly announce that Belden’s Limited Combustible (LC) Category 6 UTP cables, jacketed with recyclable DuPont™ Teflon® fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), were used in the IT infrastructure of the Buck Institute for Age Research in California. The Institute recently received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) CI Silver certification for the environmentally responsible build-out of its new laboratory space – the Larry L. Hillblom Center for Integrative Studies of Aging.

DuPont™ Teflon® FEP is a thermoplastic material that exhibits superior electrical insulating properties, as well as chemical and heat resistance. To learn more, visit http://cablingsolutions.dupont.com.

DuPont™ and Teflon® are trademarks or registered trademarks of DuPont or its affiliates.

Sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED is a green building rating system developed to encourage design and construction of green, energy efficient, and high-performing buildings. The CI Silver Commercial Interior certification awarded to the Buck Institute included an Innovation in Design Credit for Information Technology Infrastructure.

Planners of the 11,000-sq-ft laboratory build-out elected to use a combination of optical fiber cabling and fully recyclable Limited Combustible (LC) DuPont™ Teflon® FEP-jacketed copper data cables in its LAN design. They were assisted by GreenIT®, a consultancy dedicated to helping clients find practical and sustainable green solutions in IT infrastructure design. The copper cabling selected for the LAN data system installation is Belden Category 6 Limited Combustible (LC) cabling.

According to Martin Van Der Burgt, Belden Product Development Manager, "This was an excellent choice – not only from a material consumption and green point of view, but also because of the safety features of Teflon® FEP-jacketed LC cables, which have a better fire load rating and smoke and flame performance over PVC-jacketed cables. In addition, Teflon® FEP-jacketed cables reduce installation costs and total cost of ownership by reducing the need for conduit or other fire and smoke containment materials. Whether for campus or high-rise office networks, our Limited Combustible cabling offers a host of advantages. "

The concept of LC cables was brought to the market five years ago by DuPont Fluoropolymer Solutions, the manufacturer of the Teflon® FEP fluoropolymer jacketing and insulation materials. LC cables were introduced in response to a market need for a higher level of cable fire safety and the environmental benefit of being recyclable.

Belden DataTwist® LC Category 5e and Category 6 UTP cables are designed and engineered to provide advanced fire safety performance. Their conductor insulation and overall jacketing of DuPont™ Teflon® FEP fluoropolymer resin ensures that these cables meet or exceed National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 90A, NFPA Article 259,

and National Electric Code (NEC) requirements for use in plenum spaces. The chief characteristics of Teflon® FEP jacketed cables include:

• Excellent electrical properties that enable users to realize their high bandwidth data network requirements.

• Fire-proofing protection for low flame spread and low smoke generation – up to 20 times lower smoke generation when compared with standard plenum-rated constructions.

In addition to providing the ultimate in fire and smoke safety, DataTwist LC cables feature Belden’s patented Bonded-Pair technology to ensure superior Installable Performance® both before and after installation.

Belden strives to be an environmentally friendly manufacturer by providing products that are lead-free and fully meet the European Union’s RoHS Directive, as well as standards established by California Proposition 65, European Union WEEE, and China RoHS.
